Since time immemorial, the sun has been held with great reverence as a benevolent force that nourishes and sustains all life. In presenting a four-tiered hierarchy of divinities that bestow all kind of auspiciousness on us, the Skandapurana states, “arogyam bhaskarat icchet,” seek good health from the sun. The sun, in the macrocosmos is a witness to all our actions, literally bestowing light and warmth on us, with regard to the microcosmic human body, the sun has great symbolism as well. Increasingly, in modern times, as we coop ourselves in glass enclosures completely cut off from natural warmth and light, the relevance of the sun and of sunlight is becoming evident. This two-week chanting intensive focuses primarily on a selection of chants that praise the sun and invoke the sun’s blessings in myriad ways. A general introduction to the meanings of chants taught will be given and the chants will be integrated into a reflective meditative practice as well.
