Rest is an extremely important component of a yoga Asana practice. Yoga Asana is all about mindfulness and being in the present moment. Rest at appropriate places and for the appropriate time ensures that the mindfulness remains all through the Asana practice.
- Rest should be taken whenever the body demands it.
- Rest should also be taken whenever the breath is disturbed or laboured.
- Rest is also essential when there is a change of planes in the Asana practice – for example when moving from standing postures to kneeling, or lying supine postures to inversions, etc
A practice session can be called as a yoga Asana practice only if there is alertness and comfort at all points of time. Rest ensures that this balance is maintained at all times. Rest ensures consolidation in our practice at every level which is most important for us to advance in the practice.
Rest should be taken not too long and not too short; it should be for around a minute till the breath settles. And rest doesn’t mean we move on to some other thought and come back after a while. Rest is about being with one’s body and breath. Rest is about introspecting one’s Asana practice done till then and visualising the remaining Asana session yet to be practiced. Rest is about ascertaining how the Asana practice has been till then and getting prepared for the next set of asanas. Rest at the end of the practice helps consolidate the practice so we absorb all the benefits of our Yoga session.
